The index is a multicomponent CODEX and validated scale designed to predict the risk of mortality and readmissions in patients hospitalized for COPD.The CODEX index uses the same cutoffs for pulmonary obstruction (O), dyspnea (D) and exacerbations in the previous year (EX) that BODEX replacing BMI (B) by the Charlson index adjusted for age .The CODEX demonstrated in its original publication a better prognostic over other regarding mortality rates and hospital readmissions in COPD patients hospitalized for three months and one year. a cohort of patients hospitalized for COPD exacerbation in 70 Spanish Internal Medicine services (ESMI study) conducted by the working group of the SEMI COPD was used for development. Validation and development was performed in 4 other patient cohorts.The CODEX index shows the importance of comorbidities in COPD prognosis and the need for a holistic approach in addressing these patients.
